Cancer continues to be one of the most devastating medical conditions across the world.


It has claimed millions of lives; but, medical research has been underway to unravel the mechanisms at the center of cancer development and spread to other body parts.


There are various types of cancers depending on the body part they affect and the tissues they are involved with.


This article aims to summarize the definition of cancer, its causes, and how it manages to spread and infect other parts of the body.

What is Cancer?


By definition, cancer is a genetic disorder that affects the cells in the human body. Cancer causes normal body cells to grow uncontrollably before spreading.


Cancer can begin at any part of the body, and develop, before spreading to other parts. Cels normally grow through a process called cell division.


In cancer, the cell division process is very fast, producing more damaged cells in large numbers that continually divide without stopping.


As a result, large lumps of tumors are formed on the affected body parts. The process by which cancer cells invade other body tissues is called metastasis


Once cancer cells spread, they are referred to as malignant. Additionally, not every cancer causes a tumor.


Some like the cancer of the blood (leukemia) do not form any tumors but still affect normal blood cells.

What Causes Cancer?


Cancer can be caused by mistakes or errors in the DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) - the life-carrying molecule in the human body.


The DNA has information directing the formation of every component necessary for supporting life in the human body.


It has chemical bases arranged in a long thread that is well-coiled and packaged in the cells. Errors in these chemical bases are passed on to other new cells during cell division.


As such, these errors can lead to the development of cancer in later stages.


Another cause of cancer is the damage to DNA. There are certain chemicals and products such as tobacco that are highly destructive to the DNA.


Other factors like ultraviolet rays may destroy the DNA also. Additionally, individuals may inherit cancer from their parents which shows up in later stages.

How Do Cancer Cells Spread?

Cancer cells can sometimes be found in body parts they are not originally from. This means that they may move from their source to a new place.


Once a cancerous tumor forms in the source, the cells may break and move to other parts.


The cancer cells achieve this by traveling through blood or the lymphatic system to establish new tumors in new places in the body.


Normally, cancer cells invade the lungs and bones to form new types of cancers.

What Types of Cancers Are There?


There are several types of cancers known. But, a type of cancer disease is named depending on the type of tissue (e.g. brain) that it forms in or the types of cells (e.g. epithelial) that form it.


Carcinoma - carcinomas are the common types of cancers. They are formed by epithelial cells that line the body surfaces.


For example, adenocarcinoma is a type of cancer cell formed by the epithelial cells of cells that produce mucus and fluids.


Sarcoma - sarcoma is a cancer of the connective tissue. It forms in the blood vessels, bones, and fibrous tissues. 

Leukemia - this is a type of cancer that forms in the blood.


Lymphoma - this is a type of cancer that affects immune system cells. It majorly forms in the B and T lymphocytes.

What Changes Occur During Cancer Cell Development?


Normal body cells undergo some changes before cancer develops. However, not every change possibly signifies that cancer will develop.


The changes are hyperplasia, dysplasia, and cancer. Hyperplasia is the fast multiplication of cells in a tissue and not necessarily cancer.


Dysplasia is an advanced hyperplasia where cells continue to multiply building up and becoming abnormal in appearance.


The final stage is cancer development. Note, that when cancer is detected at an early stage, it can be treated.

Cancer continues to be an international threat to health. But, thanks to scientific advancement, its management has been quite easy.


Through cutting-edge techniques and treatment methods, many patients continue to survive as the disease is relatively manageable.
